What Is Binge Eating Disorder?
Binge eating disorder (BED) is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of consuming large amounts of food in a short period of time, without any compensatory behaviors such as purging. It is the most common eating disorder in the United States and affects both men and women. Common signs and symptoms of binge eating disorder include:
Eating large amounts of food in a short period of time
Eating faster than normal during binges
Feeling out of control when binging
Embarrassment or shame after binging
Eating when not hungry or in response to negative emotions
Avoidance of social situations involving food
The good news is that binge eating disorder can be treated successfully. Treatment typically involves therapy sessions, nutritional counseling and lifestyle changes in order to help individuals gain insight into their thoughts and behaviors related to food, develop healthy coping strategies and ultimately lead a healthier life.
