Autism is a neurological disorder, characterized by difficulties with communication and social interaction, as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour. This can range from challenges in everyday communication to an inability to process sensory information properly. As autism is a spectrum disorder, the symptoms and severity vary from person to person. As such, it’s important to recognize that no two people will experience autism in the same way. People on the spectrum can have difficulty communicating and understanding language, but this does not mean they are unintelligent – many go on to complete university degrees or become successful business owners. People with autism often find it difficult to interact or build relationships with other people. They may find it hard to make eye contact, read body language or understand social cues. They may also find loud environments overwhelming or confusing. It is important that we better understand autism so that we can provide proper support for those living on the spectrum and remove barriers they may face in daily life. Through greater understanding of autistic behaviours, we can create an environment where everyone is accepted for who they are and appreciated for their unique talents and skills.
