Anorexia Versus Bulimia Nervosa
Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are two of the most common eating disorders. While each disorder has unique characteristics, there are some similarities between them. Both anorexia and bulimia involve disordered eating patterns. With anorexia, individuals restrict their food intake in order to lose weight or maintain a very low body weight. Bulimia involves behaviors such as binge-eating followed by purging (through vomiting, laxative use or diuretic use). In both cases, individuals may also struggle with distorted body image and low self-esteem. However, there are key differences between the two disorders. Anorexia is characterized by extreme restriction in caloric intake and avoidance of certain types of food. Bulimia involves episodes of uncontrollable overeating followed by compensatory behaviors such as purging. Individuals with anorexia tend to be underweight, while those with bulimia can have normal or high body weights due to the binging behavior. If you or someone you know is struggling with either disorder, it is important to seek professional help from a mental health professional trained in treating eating disorders. Treatment typically includes psychotherapy and nutritional counseling as well as lifestyle changes that can help individuals gain insight into their thoughts and behaviors related to food, develop healthy coping strategies and ultimately lead a healthier life.
