It is common for adolescents to experience some level of sadness or mood swings during this time, however depression may also occur. Depression in adolescents is a serious mental health condition that can affect school performance, family relationships and other aspects of life. In order to properly support those in need, it's important to understand the signs and symptoms of depression in youths. Common signs and symptoms of depression in adolescents include:

  • Irritability

  • Restlessness

  • Loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed

  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt

  • Change in appetite (increase or decrease)

  • Low energy levels/fatigue

If you suspect that a young person in your life may be struggling with depression, it is important to seek help from a psychiatric professional who can provide an accurate diagnosis and create a personalized treatment plan.
